SMOSLT is initially distributed under the GNU version 3 license.

Rationale:

This is not a well studied decision. Our preference is something closer to an Apache or BSD styled license.

Since we are not attorneys and are not funded sufficiently to hire out the legal study of this as much as we might wish, we chose the GNU license. This is presumed to preserve our options until such time that a more liberal license could be studied.

It is hoped that this license would allow early users of SMOSLT to feel confident that our mutual work might be shared among us enough to gather a head of steam and  keep the project from fragmenting or forking at an early stage. If and when the project gains maturity, that would be less of a concern.
